The Victoria Station site presents an opportunity to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of North Manchester. Hamiltons developed a masterplan to accommodate the proposed expansion of the tram network and improvements to train services. The masterplan required the integration of access and egress to the adjacent arena and the establishment of a heritage strategy associated with the existing station roof, the refurbishment of Victoria Station Buildings, the historic alignment of Long Millgate, and the integration of city buildings.
The proposal centres on a new development deck unifying the undulating levels across the site, improving access to the transport offer, and the reintegration of this neglected quarter back into the heart of the city.
The use of decks permits the segregation of transport and events visitors in a safe and efficient manner. The design of the over-sailing roof reflects the unusual geometry of the site and track layout below and shelters the concourses and train tracks in a form with a spirit and character.
The new public realm and associated building are configured to embrace the surrounding context, allowing for future links to this important transport interchange.
