DESCRIPTION

Chenies Mews is a state-of-the-art medical research and patient facility. It is located in a narrow street close to the new University College Hospital in the Euston Road, and is attached to both the Hospital and University College London.

The challenge in designing the building was to create a high-quality contemporary envelope, which accommodates two autonomous research departments, laboratories, clinic facilities, a cryo-store, clean-room facilities, back-up generators, and associated specialist plant and services, all enclosed within the envelope of the mews building which previously stood on the site.

The principal shell materials of brick and timber reference the conservation area, with a contemporary vertical steel and glass incision framing the main building entrance. Vertical banding to the main elevation echoes the historic subdivisions of the mews buildings, whilst the contemporary design makes a powerful statement in its otherwise conservation area surroundings. The design of the scheme had strong officer support throughout planning stages, and now it is complete, has added a vibrant new statement to what was previously an unremarkable back-street.
