The proposed Carnegie Pavilion and media centre to be built at Headingley is a unique and innovative type of building for this location. It will be shared with Leeds Metropolitan University, who will be relocating those academic operations which support the activities of Yorkshire CCC and the wider Headingley Carnegie community and Yorkshire CCC who will lease the cricket facilities from the University on the basis of the required usage. The space s will be shared during the year between Yorkshire and Leeds Met University, many rooms being used for teaching during term-time. Both parties will have their own exclusive space as part of the arrangement, and all of the cricket facilities will be available on match days.
The design of the Pavilion is therefore a finely balanced resolution of the demands of the Academics, the Cricket users and media. The building provides an instantly recognisable backdrop for the Cricket during the major matches that Headingley will host in the future and provides the University with a state of the art academic building which sits within the overall Headingley neighbourhood. The sweeping roof unifies the diverse functions within the building and generates its visual signature, whilst on the street side the fluid form brings the scale of the Pavilion into harmony with the residential scale of the surrounding streets.
