For Ian Bogle the clarity and simplicity of the idea is the key to effective architecture, “without it the whole process just becomes an exercise in dressing up. Every project should be an idea, and that idea should be appropriate.” In so saying he reflects the Hamiltons philosophy of every project needing to have its own identity, driven by the context of its brief rather than one trying to reflect a particular Hamiltons style. “I’m an architect – I do buildings” he says, “don’t label me as a specialist. It’s like cooking, I play with ingredients to create what I think people will love.”
Ian studied architecture at the Mackintosh school of Architecture before joining the Parr Partnership in Glasgow. He joined Fosters in 1995 where he worked on a number of projects including the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, The Dubai Cultural Centre and Farnborough Business Park. He was the Project Director responsible for the 2004 Stirling Prize shortlisted, Bexley Business Academy and played an instrumental part in the design of Swiss Re Headquarters building, 30 St Mary Axe, the eventual winner that year.
